YMMV, etc., but I think you’d enjoy a test ride and putting it thru its paces, even if just to grok it. We’re going for maximum fun with this thing, and to me the classic BQ stance applied to this pre-ride is reductivist. Note also Jan’s favorable reviews of certain recent bikes w/ similar tubing… So, you know, give it a spin if you can. It’s different from anything I’ve ever tested. The frameset, with heat-treated .8/.5/.8 main triangle, feels light and lively, with energy return/harmonic resonance/“planing” while also handling more solidly and confidently than our 853 SD proto canti Ravn, which is great but can feel noodly; probably there’s too much torsional flexion for the spirited riding we designed this bike for. Factor in the fatter tires [RTPs and Driver Pros in my experience—oh, and Cazaderos at Hetre dimensions]. [Side note: our 853 SD canti proto frameset is only about 7oz lighter than the production 4130 OS disc.] As for heat treating, not to go down this particular, well-trod rabbit hole and summon the wonks, but a few thoughts: heat treating is good. It makes the chromoly stronger and more durable, also allowing it to relax/the molecules to align after all the stresses that cold mechanical production puts on it, but it’s dry cooled [as I understand it, heat to ~1,000°F, reduce incrementally to ~300°F, remove to air cool to ambient, over 1–2hrs (this as opposed to quenching on one end and on the other really slow cooling in a heat blanket like a sand bath over ~24hrs)]. Dry cooling means it’s going to retain good flex characteristics. It’s high-end cycling steel. It rides great. And it will last and it meets/exceeds the CEN European safety standards. As for “more flexible,” you wouldn’t want to make it even more flexible than non-heat-treated SD tubing, and in my experience, this heat-treated OS at this DB 531-esque gauge profile planes. And, of course, in general the ride has a lot to do with your tires, your contact points, your cadence, your style, and your physical strength-to-weight ratio… Our aim is to deliver a steel adventure bike that is fast and lively and performs just as well for the lightest and strongest riders as it does for the rest of us.
