The idea of a 26" love thread amuses me.
Could it be shared with a 19mm tyre love thread?
Yeah. The whole forum consultation process is a really stupid way of doing this. Very quickly dried out any optimism I might’ve had.
I was basing the 1" threadless assumption on all previous proto’s being threadless, and no direct mention of a threaded headset in the briefing. I assumed rinko compatible was just referring to the fact that the steerer could be cut and threaded.
As much as I kinda like the big bagged 26" aspect, I’m giving this one a slightly disappointed thumbs down too.
+1
Enjoying this thread, learning lots.
So in related 26" news, Rivendell literally did just re released the 80s MTB.
“There have been enough decades between the super ’80s and now. The all-steel Stumpjumper Sports and Bianchi Grizzlies and Bstone MB-whatevers have been dumped or collected, and even if you can find one, by the time you spiff it up, it’s now an $800 bike that’s still 25 to 30 years old and needs a paint job. That’s nobody’s idea of a good time.”
That’s totally my idea of a good time! Rad!
But I do wonder if instead of respraying all of my bikes that need a paint job, it might be cheaper to start my own frame painting studio. And a quarter of MTBs I come across turn out to be irreparably fucked. So I do think that Riv have identified an existing market and pitched a good bike. They did miss a good opportunity to go further on improving the 80s MTB IMO, but there are a few good aspects.
- Wheel size follows frame size: Small takes 26", Medium is 650B, and Large is a 29er.
- Inexpensive at roughly $1500 fully built (“Riv style”) and available as a frame only for $850, $700 at discount for pre sale.
Obviously a pretty different bike to the Ravn, which is more of a road performance bike than an ATB, but at least the Riv bike has actually identified a market and met their needs. Rawland took a handful of potential markets, made something that was ideal to a tiny portion of them, then tried to justify why ignoring the wishes of the wider market would give small performance gains. Kinda sounds like what the mainstream industry has been doing since the 90s.
On the other hand Riv are still sticking with their ‘baby out with the bathwater’ approach to the last 30 years of innovation, the new bike is non disc and threaded. I’d also like to see them build some bikes with low trail.
This can’t be that hard right?..
Grant’s gonna Grant.
in tangentially related news, I’ve been removed from the rCOG mailing list.
blakey this is yet another step in your unalterable fate of becoming a survivalist living off the grid in tasmania.
i googled rCOG. Didn’t know you were into this but you learn something new every day.

Lollllll
Lolololol
So rivendale is in in this too… Shiieett yes! Just put discs on the damn thing
You’re missing the point H. These guys have their own bike companies specifically to keep anachronistic bike designs and outdated braking systems alive. It’s their entire raisín d’eggtray, if you will.
Im going to have to start my own bike company
Send me a link so I can #preorder H.

I’ve been riding 26" exclusively for the last 6 months and recently I did half of a long ride completely shirtless. Horatio, I still don’t know if you’re a genius or a massive troll but clearly some of your strange magic has rubbed off on me!
Do start your own bike company! Monetise the madness!
what merch can H sell if not shirts?
nipple caps
