SPD commute shoes

Anyone got any experience with the sizing of those lakes? They look perfect for bike camping with kids shoes

Can that, they don’t have anything near my size

Tried on a few pairs at lunch today.

Spec shop - Lace up Giro Empires (ACC reflective ones) were pretty, maybe a touch narrow, but the upper really moulded to your foot. I could probably go these, except for the $$ and they didn’t have any mtb holed versions. These guys left me to my own devices.

Clarence - Tried on their bontrager mtb models. Had to go up to a 46 for width on their entry model (evoke), but 45 was ok on the Foray. Felt ok, but not sold on styling or weight. Served by the head of marketing for Trek (apparently on a retail store placement).

Giant - Tried on Shimano xc500. These were lighter in the hand than i’d expected (Edit: research says claimed weight of 301g size 42 xc500, and 315g size 42.5 for a giro VR90 empire.). 45 fit pretty good. Felt (and looks) a bit like a cheaper version of the giro empires. Also like the giros I could also probably do a slightly wider platform, because the outer part of my foot overhangs by about 5mm. According to the store, they don’t make a wide fit in the xc500.
I wanted to try on the shimano xc7 (700?), which does come in wide. But apparently they won’t order anything in unless it’s paid for  Not so helpful for me.

Next up - might try actually visiting Bike Bug, they seem to have a good range online. Not so convenient though. And might hit up some local suburban stores on the weekend for more range. Also still want to try the giro privateer (at least they have a wide ‘hv’ fit).

Question - Do other people’s feet overhang the sides of the outsole? Am i being weird looking for a shoe that doesn’t do this, and is it just normal for cycling shoes?

Classic. I wonder if they’ve heard of online retail?

Insole? No, mine don’t. Sole of my foot is spot on the width of the insole on my Privateers. You’re not weird at all looking for a shoe that fits.

my feet overhang on the outside of both my sidi road & MTB shoes, despite the MTB shoes being the wider ‘mega’ version. apparently the sole is the same as the normal shoe, it’s just the upper which is wider. that seems pretty dumb really, but they’re fine for 95% of the riding i do in them. reckon the road shoes would give me more grief if i ever actually used em!

i have blown out several shoes in the past due to this. cycling, general use, specialised athletic…1000% worth finding those that fit properly.

Called two local shops today. Seems the privateers I can try on at one (nice shop - good people), they also have the giro code, and a couple if other xc style shoes they suggested. But not the xc7 shimanos. Said they could probably order the wider privateers if required.
The other shop stocks only Shimano shoes, and they didn’t have the xc7 either, but can order them in.

Will keep looking. Maybe I’ll end up staying on flats. At least they typically have wide soles.

interesting alternative - if you can find the wide option in your size in any of the other shimano models you can get a good idea of the fit.

i have the wide fit shimano road shoes and thanks to a recent spate of HABing in my privateers they are on the way out so i rolled the dice on getting the XC7s in the same size. IMO they have a very very similar (if not the same) fit.

HV privateers might have a slightly wider toe box, but im also still breaking the XC7s in vs a well worn pair of giros.

As a counterpoint, I ordered some MT44 in the same size as my CT40 as they seemed to be the logical progression of walkable touring spds for shimano after the CT40 were discontinued and they were too small

just nabbed a pair of those Rumble VRs for $90 on bikebug.

edit - forgot to add cleats to the order though didn’t i!!! derp.

wearing my new shoes already.

first impression = good.

sole is very stiff and will take some getting used to, but seem pretty comfy and run true to size with the rest of my skate/walking/riding shoes.

yet to install the cleats i bought today, but not expecting any massive issues after speaking to the guy in the shop that also had the Rumbles on.

I’ve been using mine for a couple of years, and they’re great. Off the bike they mostly just feel like normal shoes.

yeah, they are pretty comfy. might need some inner soles for them though, the stiff sole won’t be great for my old man rolly knee.

also, fell over in them yesterday tryna wear in the new cleats. luckily it was into a garden bed. haha

yo rolly… pretty sure i have some stock spd cleats that came with a past set of shoes. when i find them ill bring to our next ride.

i bought some, but if you don’t need em i’ll happily take em off ya hands for my MTB shoes…?

So… ended up getting the Bont Riot+ in a wide fitting. Had to order from LBS, but was really easy. XC style mtb shoe, full carbon sole, boa laced, decent grip, and can heat mold them for better fit if I want.

Problem is they look chunky, wide, and I find them ugly as sin (especially the toe), but were the only ones that have fit my foot without pushing in at the sides and I just won’t wear them if they don’t fit. Maybe i’ll grow to like the look of them…

Form follows function.

So few months in riding clipless again…

Anyone else get side to side rocking on SPDs? (Edit: Not float).
I’m thinking its the thin shim I chucked under my cleats to stop the pedals wearing into the sole (which is what had started to happen after a few rides). Could have them sitting up too high, so the rubber tread is not touching the pedal. But is there something else I’m missing?

not sure I understand ‘side to side rocking’. This is when riding yeh?
