Spray paint Like a PRO / getting a BLING finish to paint job....

As said above, its done by overlaying some netting on the bas layer, white, then applying the top colour. Seen it on a lot of kenevans frames

sweet thanks guys:)

Okay, so I have stripped the frame with paint stripper, and it is nice and smooth. So the base prime layer ‘sticks’ better should I give it a sand? and with what paper?

Just give the frame a damn good clean with metho or Turps or something to get all remnants of the paint stripper/other contaminants (such as the oil from your skin) off the raw metal.

I always prime/undercoat with a killrust type paint. But that’s me. You saw the forks I painted. Straight out of the rattle can

sweet thanks man:) I’ll get some rust stuff.

and yeh, your forks look great. You, Jase and This thread on BNA are my painting inspiration.

Pretty amazing rattle can results.

Before Polish

After Polish

Wow! His finish of the colour wasn’t that great but the work with the clear was awesome!!!

what paint type from a can?

Acrylic ?Enamel? gahh it’s to much!

I have heard pros and cons from each side but I would like a definitive answer

Doesn’t matter, it’s from a can, 2-Pak is best.

Honestly I couldn’t tell you. I know with acrylic you can buff it up to a high gloss, but in humidity it can ‘wrinkle’ and get a bit gross or go chalky. We learnt that after spraying a mates Alfa Romeo in acrylic. Doh.

However I know what brands of spray paint I have used and like (trial and error) and go with what I know.

Good quality automotive acrylic from auto-one, repco etc. Plenty of colours, you can even have them mix a custom and put it in a pressure pack. Match it with Acrylic clear, same brand. Light coats.

I’d stay away from the cheap enamel cans. They are are messy, runs easier, takes longer to cure.

Saw these on a chopper forum I read sometimes. Thought I would share.

The first one has details on laying down flake and fish scales

The second has details on spraying over lace, masking off and some other neato stuff.

great find!

how good did those scales come up

hmm…flower bike for the wife…

So I am going to strip half my aluminum frame. Staight down the middle. - http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1JgYV0nQRRo/TfDfNOTAH9I/AAAAAAAACbo/QfBnvUSxAs0/s1600/screen-capture-4.png

Do I just use masking tape or would there be something better to create a dead straight split down the middle? I’m worried about paint stripper getting under the tape.

Speed line masking tape, can be had from auto paint stores.

Can anyone recommend a frame spray painter in Melbourne? I need some professionally done top coats on my latest bamboo/carbon frame. I’ve tried emailing the Spray ya bike… the art of bicycle painting! guy but haven’t had a response.

scratch that last post. he’s just replied!

mmm no dice there it seems. can anyone recommend any spray painters in melbs?

Pm’d.

I’d recommend Damo at Bike Cog Cafe, Mt Evelyn. Lovely guy and does a good job. Sprays Automotive Acrylic and is a dab hand with an airbrush.

EDIT: Otherwise its Joe Cosgrove in Brisbane or Kumo Keith in Canberra.

second that, local powder coater quoted $125 for frame and forks to be powdercoated, is this the way to go, or should i take it to a bike professional?

This is sorta related, I want to clean paint off chrome - oven cleaner? It seems to be an easy option. or…?
