I agree with Justdave that it would be good to see Cell eventually offering another frame/forks/headset (like the Cilletto). I understand that Cell would prefer to offer complete bikes in the first instance — but I also think it would be good to also offer a frame/forks/headset deal after the complete bike has been on sale for a while.
Fixed gear riders like to customise their bikes. Fixed riders also like many different types of fixies (i.e. old school track bikes, MTB based modern ‘urban warrior’ bikes, utility bikes, etc). For those reasons its impossible to offer one type of frame that covers all bases.
For what its worth, the following features describe a fixie that I think is fairly versatile, good looking and likely to be popular:
(a) a chrome-plated lugged steel frame & fork (chrome … yes);
(b) a flip/flop fixed/free rear hub (yes, I sometimes ride on a freewheel — so shoot me);
(c) removable dual pivot brakes front & rear, with chrome cable clamps (dual brakes are safer, they’re better for your knees and they make you faster — why wouldn’t you fit them?);
(d) a fork with provision for a front brake and a nice ‘sculpted’ crown;
(e) personally, drop bars with aero brake levers (you could just as easily specify narrow riser bars — fixie riders seem to be split about evenly between drops and risers);
(f) personally, a long-ish quill stem (I think most threadless stems are ugly — but the reality of bike riding in the noughties means that Cell should probably specify a 1" threadless steerer tube & a-headset);
(g) personally, threaded eyelets for racks and/or guards (they make a bike more practical & versatile, and most people won’t even notice them);
(h) personally, a road bike type saddle (black is practical);
(i) high flange silver (alloy) hubs;
(j) silver (alloy) crankset, seat post and stem;
(k) light, low profile, road-type silver rims with machined walls (not over heavy Deep-Vs); and
(l) a heavy silver chain.
What I’ve just described is what I like to think of as the bike version of a well tailored dinner suit — sharp, tasteful, elegant, timeless and comfortable, and one which makes the wearer/rider look good.
Cheers
