This probably won’t be as popular as my last appreciation thread, but I just wanted to see if there were many other S-K fans out there and have a place to worship their brilliance.
I came in at One Beat thanks to a flat mate and was lucky enough to see them play live at The Corner not long after. I actually stuck with that album for a few years until I got curious about their back catalogue, from there I’ve gathered every recording of theirs…which isn’t too hard, there’s not a massive amount, but some of the earlier recordings are getting hard to pin down.
There’s plenty of rumours about a reformation and they’ve joined others on stage recently, so I’ve got my fingers crossed for a new album.
Vocalist/guitarist Carrie Brownstein is one of the creators/actors of Portlandia.
Fun fact: their first album was recorded in Melbourne.
They did at The Corner gig, was part of the encore I believe. Check out the version with Pearl Jam, Corin just lets rip on the chorus. Of course, that will mean listening to Eddie Vedder, so I’ll let you weigh that one up.
I’m always amazed at the threads you can find on FOA. So yes, I love SK. I started with Dig me Out when I was at Uni, first I didn’t like them just because people liked them. Pretty dumb. Because my mates were so all over them I had to hide somewhere to listen to them, and loved them after a couple listens, then endured much deserved teasing from said mates. I really like ‘All hands on the bad one’, and especially that song:
The other cool thing about SK is that this is one of the few bands the wife and I can appreciate together, so when they played in Melbourne (at the Corner, maybe it was around 2005?) we went together and had a blast.
I was a bit the same - my flatmates were into them so I was reluctant to give them a listen…but One Beat got me in a headlock and forced me to pay attention.
