Boardgames

This Canberra weekend is gonna be fkn awesome.

Man I love trouble. We’ve got a set with a replacement blue piece who’s been named tall boy.

My kids are scared of him when he comes out of home

I played dixit for the 1st time last week, pretty cool group game

My American mate has a great custom game similar to this called Joker. Has a homemade board and uses cards instead of a dice.

Was playing Cards Against Humanity last night (winner of the evening: ā€œInstead of coal, this year Santa’s giving penis breath to naughty childrenā€) and someone was recommending Dixit. Meant to be like Balderdash but with drawing?

Yep, you answer with a picture from a selection in your hand, a bit like Cards Against Humanity uses words

WARNING! WARNING!

this is a trap… only play these games with him if you want to be beaten as quickly as a late 90s vegan/sXe blastbeat.

I just signed up with Adelaide boardgame geeks group after several feeble attempts to start a boardgame night.
I’m pretty excited to get my nerd on.

I’m so down for some Catan. Dan would probably be stoked too. One more person and it could happen.

Had a games night at a mates last night:

1, loveletter: japanese political card strategy game, easy to learn hard to master, quick and fun.

2, forbidden island: cooperative strategy, working to collect artifacts off a sinking island, fun and again easy to learn

3, sushi go: quick fun card game about making a sushi platter with the most points, good for people intimidated by dense rule books, cool anime graphics.

4, scattagories -classic

5, scrabble variant that I can’t recall the exact name of -cool huh

sushi go is fun.

we play a bunch of Oink games at work sometimes (card-based japanese games).

Troll, and Deep Sea Diver (?) are good too…quick 10-15 minutes games easy to pick up but with enough nuance to reward thinking.

Alright nerds. How’s this going?

I have updated my games lately.

I picked up Love Letter but in Adventure Time theme.

ā€œAdventure Time Love Letter is a game of risk, deduction, and luck for 2–4 players based on the original Love Letter game by Seiji Kanai, except re-themed with characters of the hit cartoon Adventure Time. Players are suitors trying to gain the affections of Princess Bubblegum.
In a round, each player starts with only one card in hand; one card is removed from play. On a turn, you draw one card, and discard one of the two, using the power of the discarded card to try to eliminate other players from the round. If you’re the last player in the round, or the player with the highest card when the deck runs out, then you score a point. The game is played until a player reaches a certain amount of points determined by the numbers of players.ā€

I also got Hanabi
"Hanabi, the Japanese word for fireworks, is about putting on the best possible firework show for your audience. The game is played with a deck of cards consisting of numbers 1-5, each of which in 5 different colors. Each player is dealt a hand of 5 cards, but the catch is they may not look at them. Instead, the players hold the cards facing their fellow players. Players must give each other clues and use some good old fashioned deduction to play their cards correctly. Players will need to collectively play their cards in increasing order, and by color. The game ends when either the players have completed all 5 sets, run out of cards in the draw deck, or made three errors during the game. They then total their score and see how close they are to a perfect 25."

I am thinking about grabbing Jaipur tonight.

"Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan. You are one of the two most powerful traders in the city.

But that’s not enough for you, because only the merchant with two Seals of Excellence will have the privilege of being invited to the Maharaja’s court.

You are therefore going to have to do better than your direct competitor by buying, exchanging and selling at better prices, all while keeping an eye on both your camel herds.

A card game for two seasoned traders!

When it’s your turn, you can either take or sell cards.

If you take cards, you have to choose between taking all the camels, taking 1 card from the market or swapping 2 to 5 cards between the market and your cards.

If you sell cards, you get to sell only one type of good per turn, and you get as many chips from that good as you sold cards. The chips’ values decrease as the game progresses, so you’d better hurry ! But, on the other hand, you get increasingly high rewards for selling 3, 4, or 5 cards of the same good at a time, so you’d better wait!

You can’t sell camels, but they’re paramount for trading and they’re also worth a little something at the end of the round, enough sometimes to secure the win, so you have to use them smartly.

Jaipur is a fast-paced card game, a blend of tactics, risk and luck."

Also on my hit list are

  • Sushi Go
  • Hive
  • San Juan
  • Agricola
  • Morels
  • Dominion… maybe? Could be too nerdy?

We’ve got about three of the Dominion expansions. Not really nerdy at all. You just have to love card games. You can come over and play some time.
It’s similar to Magic the Gathering in that the same base mechanic is employed in every game, but every game has vastly different tactics and strategies based on the cards used.

Also good is Lords of Waterdeep.

Edit, and Seven Wonders. Seven Wonders is quite good for people who aren’t ā€˜games people’.

Yeah, it’s at the bottom of the list at the moment. Down the track maybe…

I might try Lords of Waterdeep on the iPad to see what it’s like. There are a few games mentioned that appear on the iPad for a fraction of the price of the boardgame. So they are able to give you a bit of a taste for the game before you shell out for the box.

I’ve got Lords of Waterdeep too, so you can borrow that. Maybe it’s time for an FOA boardgames night/weekend once I’m in the new place.

Yeah, I think so!

Hanabi is quite challenging, and extremely frustrating when one player doesn’t get what everyone else is thinking! Good filler game.

I’d recommend Agricola. I can’t work out the right strategy, but it’s good complex game (with more complexity available in the standard set without having to buy expansions) without being too confusing.

As for Dominion and San Juan, you can look for Androminion and Condado if you have an android phone for unofficial versions of the same games to get a feel for whether you want to buy them.

For games for non-gamers, grab King of Tokyo. Good quick game that anyone can get into. And being a monster destroying a city and each other is a concept anyone can understand. Friend picked up King of New York, but we prefer Tokyo due to it’s simplicity.

I really should pick this up seeing as I played this game way too much as a kid:

I should contribute more to this thread.

Upstairs neighbors/friends are designing a game in their spare time (both video game makers, artist & tech).
So they have been buying a lot of different games.

We played one called Tokaido the other day. It’s so beautiful. You travel along the Tokaido Road (Tokyo - Kyoto) and pick up things along the way worth points. No dice, person at the end of the road goes next and you choose how far you go. Everyone has to recollect at the end of the ā€œdayā€ in the inn and eat food.

Enjoyable without worrying about winning necessarily.

I’ll make a note of the name of the games we play more often.

Did not read, but here you go
