Heavymetal's commuter bike manifesto

Look good don’t they? I’d like something like this on my tourer when I finally get around to shipping it over.

Had any issues with these tyres?

Nitto Grand Raundonners (B135) I’d wager. Noodles sweep back, randos sweep up.

well, I’ve probably only got 20k’s of short trips on them at the moment…
They felt good in the torrential downpour Sunday night! But as for speed, well they don’t feel super quick (they are rated to 80psi and I am running them at 90) but they certainly corner well and I guess they roll as fast as a 32mm tyre at that pressure should…

Ask me in a hundred K’s or so…

Crappy pic and I have already changed the stem.
New wheelset and drop bars on the way, but at least it’s rolling. Rear rack to follow.

This is all I have at the moment.

Sticker’d up since this pic. oh and I put a Deta Pista Newton stem on.

Timcruicky: sweet ride, but you coulda put that in the normal post yr ride section. It needs racks/guards/cantis to fit in around here
Gordy, is that one of the new casseroles?

Ha! I’m a tool… cant figure out how to delete, I give up.

My nearly finished first build.
Had nothing but grief from this bad girl, next time I will start with all new components!
Anyone know what frame and year this is? All I know is its an old raliegh by the insignia on the front, it had wierd mounts on the bottom of the top tube for im assuming a pump, also a nut on the fron fork maybe for a basket?

Neearly finished first build.
Fuji DRX2000 rear
CRX 420 front
FlyBikes BMX Pedals w Holdfast straps
unknown headset and risers
unknown bottom bracket
Sugino Cranks 42t Chainring

I like your owl.

New to the forum, good mate Kevin recommended I check it out… Great setup lads…Tried to load up a pic of the old fixed to no avail…Actually thinking about upgrading…anyone looking to retire old parts let me know hoping to build up from scratch.

many nice bikes in this thread…

So i’ll lower the tone by posting my commuter:

(yes its a crappy pic, i was playing around seeing if i could get pics off my phone, turns out i can)

Trek 520 (I think) acquired from erle and, despite appearances, worth every one of the 25 gluten free vegan muffins it cost :P.
Appears to once have been red before hanging out in a spray booth and getting covered in white 2pac overspray

The only parts worth mentioning are rolls saddle, sugin0 75 drive side crank, fyxo chainring, shimano UN91 BB (bought 2nd hand, thrashed for 4 years, still going strong, fuken indestructible), handspun dyno front wheel.

heres my random first build.
got the frame for 20 bones yeah boi!

CR420 front wheel
unknown rear wheel, risers, etc
Sugino Cranks
Holdfast Straps

if anyone knows how old this frame is or a model type that would be awesome to know.
All I know is its an old raleigh it used to have what Im told was a pump rack on the bottom of the top tube which I cut off, as well as a nut on the front forks for a basket?
Next time I build a bike I am gonna start with all new parts, this whip has been a good learning curve for a novice such as myself!

These are the bikes me the the lady toured on in The Netherlands. We told the bike hire guy Amsterdam we planned to have them for a couple of days but then we decided to see the the rest of the Place and took em back 3.5 weeks later.
We went way up north and then down south along the coast to Dordrecht and camped all along the way. It was rad.
Its the best way to see a country.

Also put my foot through the front wheel during some bicycle tomfoolery in zandvoort resulting in many broken spokes and a mangled foot.

Just thought I’d lift the tone of this thread with a little class. Hammered VO fenders, Brooks saddles, canvas handlebar bags: eat-your-heart-out. This is the old bastard commuter

Note the rack that was held on with cable ties. Riser bars with bar-ends in the middle. One is missing the plug on the end, just waiting to ‘apple-core’ something or someone. The brake levers don’t match. The rear brake cable is held on to the top tube with red electrical tape even though there is nothing wrong with the cable stops. And the best bit is the single speed chain tensioner, a roller from a chain guide, bolted to the rear derailleur hanger. Years before DMR released their STS.

At least it has a rack.

Sorry HM, I missed your question. Yes 2011 Casseroll. It comes with the front rack. I have now fitted VO stem, Ritchey classic curve dropbars and VO handlebar bag and seat bag.
I will try and add pics over the weekend.

Thanks to Eric at Gear and Mark at Epic Cycles for getting me the VO stuff.
New wheelset still to come.

Me likes !!!

Top vote for the VO stem that makes it look old school quill stem cool. Does the front rack come standard with the casseroll frame or is it a Nitto that’s been painted to match? I like the look of the old Casseroll but the new one’s like yours make for quite an adaptable frameset and also look very well thought out.

Well done  Extra points for the downtube shifters. Mrs. Spirito refers to them as lane changers - every time she has used them she changes lanes or rides into the gutter when changing a gear (she’s such a noob/brifter dependent).

The single bolt and long lever arm of the tall stack VO is its downfall. creak creak creak. I’m about to pull mine and regrease and tighten to max specified torque.

The rack is OEM from Salsa.

Very cool bikes, a big improvement on the original Casseroll.
