Heard a horrid racket while waiting to cross rhe road yesterday arvo. Twin cab ute crashing down the road with a steer tyre flapping around into the guards and rim partially into the ground.
She kept going as far as I could see. Looked like no intention of stopping. Half expected to see a fleet of cop cars after her.

Approaching a T intersection a few days back - bike lane between turn left lane and two turn right lanes. Cyclist with infant on rear seat waiting at the red light in the bike lane. Left green arrow comes on, so a bus driver decides to make a left turn.
As the bus turns, the rear end pushes into the cyclist and infant. They scramble to get out of the way and somehow stay upright. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, but the cyclist shakes it off and returns to waiting for the green light as if nothing had happened.
I told him he should report the bus driver. He acknowledged my suggestion, but continued merrily on his way.

3 cyclists, one of them now dead wre hit by a car in Gunghalin ACT this morning around 6.30am, not much in the way of details.
I happen to know that a previous member of ABN forum Ross lived in this area and rides but he said to me the other day that he hasn’t ridden recently so hopefully he is not involved.
The ACT is a very small region and quite a number of road deaths have been recorded this year.
This article doesn’t state actually what happened but…there was a motorist involved rightly or wrongly.

probably should go in a cyclist fatality thread till any cause/blame is attributed.

I rode past a couple of hours after, very confronting. I’ve ridden that section often, it doesn’t scream out “dangerous”. There is no way the riders were at fault.
that’s tough. riding sections where a rider has been killed or seriously injured makes you really think about what you can do to mitigate risks. I’ve driven past the Cameron Frewer crash site a number of times and sometimes there’s nothing you can do (alternatives are non-existent/limited, risk mitigates are just not possible)
Oh, there’s definitely risk mitigation there (single up, for a start), but 2-up is supposed to be safer, isn’t it? I’ve often wished for an on-road in that section as the parallel shared pathway is rubbish at pace and it would be nice to have my own lane. I can imagine how this accident occurred, it requires a driver to be tailgating in the right lane and ass-u-me that the left lane is clear when doing a lane change, or they were so busy tailgating in the left lane they never saw the bunch. There are places I will not ride - but this was NOT one of them. I suspect I will find other routes now.

I have mitigated risk in where and when I ride for years now.
If your number is up with somebody distracted, incompetent, impatient, aggressive or a combination of all, then it is up and nothing you can do. I make myself visible and limit exposure through quiet routes and times. Only measures I can take besides quitting, which I am not doing.
Device distraction should be a mandatory licence suspension. It is a similar risk profile to drink driving but no apparent focus on it and it is very prevalent now. We don’t know this is another example of it, but it is common.

Condolences to all those members of the ACT community who have lost one of their loved ones.
Too many communities are affected by tragedy due to road trauma.
The singular emphasis of vehicular “safety standards” on vehicular “crash worthiness” (and not protection of pedestrians and cyclists) in Australia (and many other countries) is BS

It appears that the cyclist killed was a female Tri-athlete Originally from Perth. She passed away at the scene despite others around her trying to bring her back. She had intended to return to Perth this coming December.
Bridie Lee 32 was the lady who was killed when a blue Hyundai ploughed into them on Gunghalin Drive Palmeston, she was in Canberra on a temporary basis working as a data specialist at the Australian Bureau of Statistics. She was riding with her Club the Bilbys.
One Cyclist still in Hospital, one in a critical condition. No Details of driver in Blue Hyundai.
