Recommend a good weight weenie helmet

still looking H?

Poc Octal, 195gms…pricy but.

YES!! That wins I think.

I have worn the white one and it’s insanely light even compared to my mojito.
They have by far the best sunglasses holder out of any helmet, so much so if you put my radars in the holes you can actually pick the helmet up by the sunnies.

The helmet has been rejected by aus standards though so poc have gone back and changed their hole production line, they are hoping to have it approved in the next couple of months,
The tt helmet won’t be approved though and they won’t bother trying but will be available in Australia with a race only sticker.

Another cool feature is the are putting q code stickers on them so that if you have an accident it can be scanned and bring up all your personnel details.

I was never a fan of them but the white is pretty nice once on

I reckon they are ace, and once they are here and approved i will 98% buy one.

I currently have a cratoni bullet helmet which is sub 200g iirc, its good, but not amazing.

Really, a swedish company is failing an australian safety standard? I’m finding that hard to believe, and it’s award winning design? Sounds like they didn’t pay enough for the sticker.

I like that POC.

^ yeah I’m all over the white when it gets approved and then I’m completely sans specialized.

expect to pay about $300, seems due late april/early may for the few places ive seen selling them

No one knows when not even poc aus they are just guessing we get told a few weeks every few weeks since January , Australia has some of the highest standards in the world, it was mainly the straps I think.

$5 bike share helmets get the ok, but this doesn’t? Bizarre.

Not true actually.

Australia makes local sellers/importers jump through hoops and supply extra helmets for testing. Net result we get the same helmets as supplied to other markets but because of the extra bullshit and cost involved to qualify for a sticker, we as customers get the privilege of paying far more than any other market … for the exact same shit.

Net result: people rock shitty helmets way longer than their used-by date, and buy cheaper helmets because of the $300 sticker shock + we get less options.

I’ve seen what passes as Australian Certified. It just promotes larger volume/scale manufacturers that can suck up the extra costs … not quality.

either way some negligent driver will kill me, and it would have happened because the sticker prevented a decent helmet from saving my life, but the offender will spend less time behind bars than someone who jay walked, ie none. happy hump day.

We must have stricter standards than a lot as we fail several helmets that are readily available worldwide like the poc,
We are paying to much but they see still pretty much the same price around the world,
My kask is pretty much within $50-80 of its price any where on line same goes with the poc it’s the same here as online

What spirito says echoes what I was told a few years back.

Catlike made a couple of minor changes to the whispa and had to get all their helmets re-certified. The cost of doing so (and at the time the relatively low interest for them outside of the hipster market) meant that they CBF.

thus there were next to no catlikes available for some time… until the distros changed and someone ponied up for the testing.

sure the standards are high here, but the cost of testing to those standards (and the stock required to pass the testing) make it harder to justify for helmets that might not sell in real volume (aka the POC)

Good article on the subject:

You should also take into account that manufacturers also have our interests in mind (if only because we can sue them). So if a helmet is not for for purpose, doesn’t do what it’s intended for (within reason). Then they will be out of business pretty soon and their products won’t ever be sold. It seems to work pretty well for most other countries except ours where we have a 2nd independent body regulating this issue and we get to pay for such.

You know the deal Dayne, you’re working with bikes. I can name a hundred bikes that meet wit Australian standards/certified and sold through everyday bike shops that are the biggest pieces of shit and I would recommend my enemies to ride them let alone kids, and customers who don’t know any better. Some are even lethal imo. Same goes for helmets with Oz cert stickers … I honestly think it by an large doesn’t count for shit with regards quality and safety. Just hoops that the bigger players can jump through.

If the POC is available sub $300, I’ll buy it. I love Swedish design.

$US270 + post, available next month so they say

POC Octal Helmet

I love the POC’s but they are still a bit mushroon-head.

Proabably just going to buy one of the new Kask Rafaello’s or whatever they are semi-aero thing, 235g $129
