What’s the best deal on an Apex group? More than the $370ish HLC has quoted for tiagra
Most cheap online shops are OOS of Apex hence the lack of SRAM talk. I’ve never used a SRAM kitted bike, and would probably lean that way if I could get it for the right price.
Tiagra is still on the table, but all this ridiculous Campag talk has me looking around the room/shed at other bits and pieces I could possibly sell to fund xenon/veloce/freehub lol
will be working hard this weekend getting stuff cleaned and ready for sale HA HA
youll be looking for more things to sell when it comes time to replace your chain/cassette/chainrings on your campy commuter
Yeah … what he said.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” (Mark Twain)
I don’t hate Tiagra at all. In fact I hand built Mrs. Spirito’s wheels using lowly Tiagra hubs (don’t tell her) and they’ve been fine and used on 3 bikes so far. It’s not a bad groupset and i’ve found the hubs to be doing fine (completely silent).
I’ve used and built up bikes with current Tiagra, 105 and Veloce (and everything else). For the money Veloce’s a steal, looks great and uses the cheapo 10 speed chains and cassette’s which I think is a huge advantage over the higher end Campag stuff (11 speed = expensive).
It’s not Tiagra hating. I’m just saying that I know which groupset I think looks nicer, works better, will last longer and hold it’s value.
Are Veloce shifters rebuildable? If so I would painfully concede this is a big +
If they are I’ll go campag. Warranty is good, but after trying to ghetto fix a 105 brifter only making it worse then rebuilding/servicing is a BIG plus.
The bike is not a commuter, I have a company car for that, but just something else to ride. I’ve been doing some big rides lately with my mates on their roadies, and whilst I’m having a ball riding fixed with them, I’m not feeling so healthy after riding 80+ Kay’s at a 30kph average speed in the constant headwind that is Perth. It’s also not going to be a showpiece or Sunday best. If I wanted a big dollar roadie, I’ll buy one. But I don’t, just something classic with a cheap/modern, reliable (lol cheap and reliable) groupset! Hence the Tiagra/Veloce questions! Campag is prettier, Tiagra is cheaper lol!
the correct answer is always “buy what you can afford”
Affording it is not the issue. It’s about getting rolling for less. Bang for buck is what I’m after. No point putting Di2 on a 30 year old steel frame.
If your leaning towards Campag Veloce is a no brainer don’t get Xenon though.
Given this looks a lot like ultegra 6600, and without doing the research on materials, I suppose it is more-or-less the same. No doubt it will get the job done.
Have a good look at the Veloce levers.
Veloce has the power torque crank- have they resolved the removal issue?
yes, the Park tool is readily available now. Budget about $150 for it though.
Or just take it to Shifter.
Those Shimano cranks are fugly. These on the other hand…

…Look cheap arse!
Seriously the ‘problem’ with shimano is they are ubiquitous, and therefore not exclusive.
Tiagra’s OK, it’s just… there. Can’t really say I’ve ever had a problem with shifting while using it. It’s definitely not very passion-infused though. Especially if you’ve got a scuzzy FSA crank that’s losing its anodisation on there.
i beg to differ
fuck dudes, they’re cranks, not fucking picassos.
watch this see how it goes

just as an aside question- i know sweet FA about campy stuff, but if we were to compare apples and oranges, would Veloce be ~equivalent~ to Tiagra or 105?
